When Change is no longer a Dirty Little Word

Change. What a powerful word. For most people the word “change” elicits an immediately reaction. The word “change” has meaning… but what meaning does it have for you?

The study of human nature tells us that change elicits a primordial response of fear or at least caution. Change means things are not going to be the same and our basic instinct is to pull back into a defensive response of fight or flight because if things are not the same then whatever is different could pose a threat to us!

Growing and Changing WITHIN an Existing Legacy

One of the issues raised time and time again is the disconnect between what some of us “know” we should do and the chains of existing legacy that continually wrap themselves around us when we actually try to go to a “new place.” It almost seems that many of the other people in the organization are actively resisting our desire to do the Right Things and that they do so through the use of legacy roadblocks.

Complexity: Cause or symptom of confusion?

Complexity is the defining character of our age. We see it encroaching on us from every direction. Complexity seems to have infected even those things that were at one time very simple. Remember S&H Green Stamps, one of the first customer loyalty programs? My parents and grandparents collected them whenever they made a purchase at a participating vendor. They licked and placed them in books until they had enough to redeem for an item in the S&H Catalogue. They sent the required number of books and pages of green stamps off to wherever and a short time later we received the item in the mail. A model of simplicity compared to what we have now.
